New Books in German

New Books in German promotes German-language literature for translation into English in the UK, USA, and beyond. Twice a year, the project convenes expert juries in the USA and UK to select books submitted by German-language publishers. The titles recommended have been judged to have strong potential for success in the English-speaking market.

Alongside these recommendations, New Books in German publishes articles and information on books, authors, and the translators and publishers who bring their work to wider audiences. The Goethe-Institut UK is a major partner and funder of the project, supporting the promotion of German-language literature by helping to identify and translate contemporary works for English-speaking readers.

About the project

From June 2021 to December 2024, I managed the Goethe-Institut UK’s website, social media, digital strategy, podcasts, and editorial budgets, playing a pivotal role in the production and delivery of this literature project. Representing the Communications team, my key responsibilities included building and maintaining the New Books in German webpage, editing and translating English and German copy, and commissioning and producing video content.

Working closely with partners and authors, I developed and implemented digital marketing campaigns, creating and publishing content across LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. Using tools such as Meta Business Suite and Eventbrite Analytics, I regularly reported on engagement and audience reach, providing insights to refine strategy and demonstrate impact to stakeholders. I also administered all contracts and payments for commissioned editorial work.

In 2024, I also coordinated two special Instagram takeovers with internationally acclaimed writers Jackie Thomae and Khuê Phạm to document the English-language book launches hosted at the Goethe-Institut London for their respective novels: Thomae’s Brothers (2019, German original, Brüder) and Phạm’s Brothers and Ghosts (2021, German original Wo Auch Immer Ihr Seid). These two takeovers not only served to reach the project’s objective of elevating diverse voices in literature, but they also offered audiences a behind-the-scenes insight into the lives of the writers and our work at the Goethe-Institut London.
